I was driving around town running last minute errands on Christmas Eve. . .which happens to be my favorite day of the year because I truly believe people are genuinely kinder, more content and less likely to become annoyed. Seriously, isn't it hard to be grumpy on Christmas Eve?
My Pollyanna attitude was almost flattened this year as I was driving from one store to another. I was in the left lane of traffic that was moving very slow. . .like 20mph in a 45 zone. I was trying to stay in the Christmas spirit and not blow past this old Buick Regal as I envisioned the driver to be a gray-haired senior citizen hunched over the steering wheel and trying to carefully maneuver his/her way through traffic. The two cars in front of me went around the car, which left me directly behind the Buick and what I thought was an elderly person. As I got a better look at the driver behind the wheel. . .when what did my wandering eyes should appear. . . but a middle-aged woman with a cigarette in one hand and a cup of coffee (without a lid, no less) in the other. No wonder traffic was moving slowly, she must have been steering with her legs.
I managed to maintain my Christmas attitude, but seriously. . .for the love of all things safe, please don't drink lidless coffee, smoke and drive. Keep it at 10 and 2.

if only she had been on a cell phone, it would have made the classic picture. multi tasking while driving is not a good thing.
